Lori Beam and Colby Stone Educate UMKC Physician Assistant Students on Key Employment and Health Care Issues

Seigfreid Bingham Attorneys Lori Beam and Colby Stone enjoyed their recent opportunity to deliver an in-depth presentation to physician assistant (PA) students at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine on the complex legal and regulatory issues relevant to understanding and negotiating the terms of offered employment agreements and other arrangements for the provision of their PA services.

The presentation was given to PA students graduating in May 2026, serving as a practical guide for entering their first job following graduation.

Drawing on extensive experience advising hospitals, medical groups, and advanced practice providers, Lori and Colby provided a comprehensive overview of the statutory, contractual, and compliance considerations that shape PA practice in Kansas and Missouri. They covered critical topics including supervision requirements, corporate practice of medicine restrictions, fee‑splitting prohibitions, ownership rules for professional entities, and the distinctions between employee and independent contractor classifications. They also walked students through key contract provisions, such as compensation structures, malpractice coverage, restrictive covenants, and termination rights, highlighting how these terms impact both providers and employers.

Lori and Colby enjoyed the opportunity to play a small role in launching the PA students’ careers, knowing the important role health care providers play in our families and society.
